Credential Pathways Explained

Canadian credentials are connected. A good plan looks not only at the first program, but also at what that credential lets you apply for next.

Start with the next credential

A student finishing high school may apply to college or university. A student with a bachelor's degree may apply to postgraduate college programs, applied master's programs, or university master's degrees.

Common pathways

  • High school diploma to college diploma or university bachelor's degree
  • College diploma to a bachelor's degree when transfer requirements are met
  • Bachelor's degree to postgraduate certificate, applied master's, or university master's
  • Master's degree to PhD where research fit and supervisor requirements are met

Why pathway planning matters

Some routes are direct, while others depend on grades, prerequisites, transfer agreements, or program-specific rules. Planning ahead prevents dead ends.
