How Scholarships Really Work

Scholarships for international students exist, but they are usually competitive, merit-based, and partial. Planning with realistic expectations matters.

Acceptance usually comes first

Many entrance scholarships are considered after you apply for admission. If awarded, they often appear with or shortly after your admission offer.

Most awards are partial

  • Common entrance awards may range from about CAD $1,000 to $10,000
  • Full-tuition awards exist but are rare and very competitive
  • Awards often depend on grades, leadership, program, or country of citizenship
  • Scholarships should reduce cost, not replace full financial planning

Watch for red flags

  • Legitimate scholarships do not require agent fees
  • Be careful with third-party promises of guaranteed funding
  • Use official school or government sources to confirm awards
