Proof of Funds Explained

Proof of funds shows that you can pay for your studies and living costs in Canada. It is one of the most important parts of the study permit file.

What funds need to cover

  • Tuition for the first year or required period
  • Living expenses under current IRCC expectations
  • Travel costs where relevant
  • Additional family costs if dependants are applying with you

Common evidence

  • Guaranteed Investment Certificate
  • Bank statements or official bank letters
  • Proof of tuition payment or deposit
  • Sponsor documents and relationship evidence where applicable
  • Scholarship or funding letters if awarded

Quality matters

Funds should be clear, traceable, and consistent with the story of the application. Unclear deposits or incomplete documents can create questions.
